Within 0080, personnel security means clearances and suitability, industrial security means cleared contractors, and information security means classifying and safeguarding national security information rather than the IT-focused cybersecurity work of the 2210 series; continuity and emergency planning often sit in the same office. Employers span the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency, Air Force headquarters, National Guard units, the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration.
Recent listings have included security specialists and supervisory security specialists, information security specialists, personnel security specialists, industrial security specialists, security training specialists, port and recovery security specialists, a continuity plans and policy specialist, an emergency management specialist and security officers, some of them Title 32 Guard positions.
Applying tip: the clearance line is the real gate. Many 0080 positions require eligibility for a Top Secret clearance, and some require sensitive compartmented information access, so the announcement’s “Security clearance” and “Conditions of employment” sections tell you whether it’s worth applying. If you already hold a clearance, state it, the level and the date of your last investigation plainly in your resume.
