Social Work
65 open positions in this category
OPM series 0185. Professional social workers who help individuals and families cope with health, housing, family, and social problems through counseling, case management, and referrals.
The Veterans Health Administration is the dominant employer in 0185, with military treatment facilities and National Guard units behind it, and VA social workers are hired under Title 38 hybrid authority with qualification standards set by the VA rather than the usual GS standard.
Recent listings have included staff and senior social workers, clinical social workers, supervisory social workers and program coordinators, with many positions attached to named VA programs: HUD-VASH supportive housing for homeless veterans, the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program, mental health residential rehabilitation treatment programs, caregiver support and the Vet Center readjustment counseling program. Some announcements have offered the Education Debt Reduction Program or recruitment and relocation incentives.
Applying tip: announcements ask for a master’s degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, and senior and supervisory roles require a license to practice independently; state your degree, license, jurisdiction and level clearly. Program-specific titles reward resumes that describe experience with that population. The federal benefits guide covers what comes with a VA position beyond salary.
