Duties
You will serve as a research Oceanographer within the Undersea Surveillance Systems Section (Code 7184), applying data science principles to a large-scale oceanographic data repository critical to the Maritime Surveillance Systems (MSS) program.
You will serve as a technical subject matter expert and will provide vital analysis and recommendations to the Section Head on emerging data technologies, formats, and their potential impact on undersea warfare modeling.
You will conduct basic and applied research on novel data structures, formats, and data engineering methods to ensure complex undersea datasets are optimized for tactical and scientific exploitation.
You will research, prototyping, and evaluating new data architectures, parsing methods, and processing workflows optimized for acoustic system performance modeling.
Education
Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: A. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. or B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Foreign Education: Required for Vacancies with Positive Education or Education Substitution - Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
