Duties
You will serve as a METEOROLOGIST in the Forecast Operations division of JOINT TYPHOON WARCEN PEARL HARBOR HI.
You will demonstrate expertise in all aspects of tropical meteorology to issue time-critical TC warnings.
You will apply specialized technical knowledge to synthesize data, satellite imagery, radar, and numerical weather prediction model guidance to forecast TC track, intensity, and structure and issue authoritative TC warnings and decision support.
You will work as the on-shift forecast lead for a 4-person joint service watch team.
You will maintain broad situational awareness of key DoD installations and assets and U.S. civilian interests potentially affected by TCs.
You will independently operate specialized meteorological systems including the Automated Tropical Cyclone Forecast software system (ATCF), the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS), and and satellite display software.
You will develop and maintain standard operating procedures and dataflow documentation.
You will proactively troubleshoot critical meteorological computer systems and associated data flow processes to ensure continuous 24x7 operations.
You will conduct detailed annual post-storm analysis of the track, intensity, and structure of all TC activity.
You will perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:Basic Requirements: Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;* Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.* Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.* At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. * There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major. or Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
