Veterans Claims Examining

11 open positions in this category

The 0996 series, Veterans Claims Examining, is the Veterans Benefits Administration’s claims workforce. Veterans Service Representatives develop and process claims for disability compensation, pension and related benefits, gathering service and medical records and deciding entitlement; Rating Veterans Service Representatives evaluate the medical evidence and assign disability ratings under the rating schedule. Every listing in this series comes from VBA, mostly its regional offices.

Recent listings have included veterans service representatives, rating veterans service representatives, authorizers, an assistant quality review specialist, and supervisory veterans service representatives at the coach, assistant coach and veterans service center manager levels.

Applying tip: VBA’s titles carry its own vocabulary, where a “coach” is a first-line supervisor of a claims team and “VSCM” is the manager of the regional office’s veterans service center. Rating announcements generally ask for prior experience in claims development or adjudication, so if you are new to the work start with the non-rating VSR announcements. Many applicants are veterans; our veterans’ preference guide explains how preference is applied when a job is open to the public.
