OPM series 0180. Psychologists who study behavior and mental processes and apply that knowledge in counseling, assessment, treatment, research, or program design.
In the federal government, 0180 overwhelmingly means the Veterans Health Administration, where psychologists work in medical centers and community clinics, though the Defense Health Agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a few civilian agencies also hire into the series.
Recent listings have included staff psychologists in primary care mental health integration, behavioral health interdisciplinary programs, substance use and residential rehabilitation treatment programs, home-based primary care and community living centers, as well as a neuropsychologist, psychology program managers and clinical psychologists serving as mental health consultants.
Applying tip: VA announcements require a doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited program and an accredited internship, and a license at most grades (new graduates can be appointed before licensure and must obtain one within a set period); they spell out which accreditations and internship routes qualify, so read the “Qualifications” section closely. Many VA titles also mention EDRP, the Education Debt Reduction Program, or a recruitment incentive; those are awarded after selection, not negotiated in the application. The federal resume guide shows how to present clinical experience the way VA reviewers expect.
