Medical Officer
189 open positions in this category
OPM series 0602. Licensed physicians who diagnose and treat patients, advise on medical matters, or direct medical programs and research.
Titles in 0602 range from primary care doctors, psychiatrists, cardiologists, radiologists, pathologists and surgeons to the chiefs of staff and section chiefs who lead them. Most federal physicians work for the Veterans Health Administration, which hires them under Title 38 rather than the standard competitive-service process; the Defense Health Agency and the Food and Drug Administration also post in this series.
Recent listings have included far more telework-eligible than fully remote roles: the job is tied to a VA medical center or community-based outpatient clinic, with telework possible for parts of the week. A few roles, such as tele-hospital medicine, have been built around virtual care from the start.
Applying tip: 0602 announcements require a current, full and unrestricted license in any US state, and many VHA postings are open continuous with recruitment or relocation incentives and EDRP (student loan repayment) noted in the title. Read the remote vs telework explainer to understand what a telework-eligible clinical post actually permits.
